Diversity and Inclusion Oversight Board

Description:

The Diversity and Inclusion Oversight Board (DIOB) serves to strengthen and streamline oversight of diversity and inclusion initiatives. The DIOB assesses progress related to goals set forth in the university-wide Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP).

In order to achieve its goal, the DIOB has a variety of charges:

  • Meeting regularly with the Vice President for Institutional Equity and Diversity along with ex-officio members to review and comment on early iterations of the annual DIAP report
  • Inviting senior leaders to DIOB meetings to discuss progress and opportunities related to specific goals (i.e. the Dean of the Faculty, the Dean of Admissions, the Office of Institutional Research, the Provost)
  • Reviewing the ‘monitoring progress’ webpage and ensuring current data is populated and available to the Brown community
  • Annually author a memo to the president and provost highlighting key areas that require the University’s close attention as it pertains to DIAP initiatives

Graduate Council

Number of Graduate Student Representatives: 4 (1 ex officio Alternate)

Description: 

The Graduate Council consists of administrators, faculty members, and graduate students, and sets policy for the Graduate School subject to the approval of the faculty and the Board of Fellows. Such policy includes the conditions for admission and the procedures for the award of graduate fellowships and scholarships, the supervision of degree requirements, the approval process for new courses and other modifications of existing degree programs, and approval and recommendations to the faculty regarding new degree programs. At least once every five years, the Graduate Council also reviews graduate programs in consultation with the departments and makes annual reports to the Faculty Executive Committee (FEC) and the faculty of its activities during the preceding year.

The GSC is currently seeking a new representative from the physical sciences and social science. The term lasts the academic year with the opportunity to extend. Applicants should have at least one year of experience as graduate students at Brown (ie entering their 2nd year or later). Meetings occur once a month.

Graduate Library Advisory Committee

Description:

The purpose of the Graduate Library Advisory Committee (GLAC)  is to provide feedback to the Brown University Library regarding the Library’s efforts to meet the scholarly, pedagogical, and teaching needs of graduate students at Brown. Committee members should serve as a liaison between their fellow students and the Committee, soliciting and communicating feedback from students concerning Library collections, services, policies, and facilities. In addition, the Committee will devise and recommend avenues to improve the Library’s support of graduate student activities with respect to publishing, research and scholarly ethics; digital scholarship and data management; sharing and preservation; and professional development. The committee may engage in special projects such as leading, developing and coordinating surveys and focus groups to help analyze and target graduate student needs in the Library. 

The committee will set its schedule based on member availability. The committee is particularly in need of graduate students in the social sciences and public health.

Library Advisory Board

Number of Graduate Student Representatives: 2

Description:

The Library Advisory Board (LAB) advises the University Librarian, and other senior officers as appropriate, on resources and priorities with regard to the University Library System. The Library Advisory Board reviews and makes recommendations about the University’s policies concerning the Library and its operations; helps monitor the effectiveness of library services; and comments on planning and implementation of plans for current and proposed Library policies and programs.

The Board reviews and makes recommendations with regard to policies consistent with the goals and objectives of the University for the proper use of library resources by faculty, staff, and students; the enhancement of the faculty and student academic environment through the effective use and support of the Library; appropriate Library support for research; and the enhancement of Library resources and support. The Library Advisory Board coordinates its agenda and work with the Computing Advisory Board as appropriate.

Two graduate students serve on the Board, on staggered two-year terms. The Board will meet at least twice a year (once each semester), and meetings typically include lunch when held in person.

University Resources Committee (URC)

Number of Graduate Student Representatives: 2

Description:

This exceptionally important committee determines the budget allocations of the university for the following fiscal year. The committee members do not have to prepare for the meetings.  However, they are sometimes asked to review materials in advance. 

Charge: 
a. The Committee shall serve to review, to analyze, and to offer recommendations to the President on all budgetary plans, proposals, and priorities, both current and future, affecting the University. 
b. The Committee shall be responsible for maintaining a level of awareness of budgetary matters throughout the University that will encourage the development of informed opinions and the articulation and discussion of issues. 
c. The Committee shall review, analyze and make recommendations regarding the allocation of University resources for the coming fiscal year and for long-range plans developed by the administration or by other duly constituted committees. 
d. The Committee will conduct its business in closed session. The Committee will, however, host University-wide forums as necessary and appropriate to allow the Committee to hear the concerns and priorities of the University community. 
e. The Committee shall, at appropriate points during the preparation of the University budget, report in written form to the President its analysis and its policy recommendations concerning the allocation of resources within the University.
